Why We Pause in the Jerk (And Why It Matters)

If you’ve been in class or attended one of our Olympic lifting sessions, you’ve probably seen us program pause push jerks or pause split jerks.

And one of the most common questions we get is:

Why are we pausing?

At first, it can feel unnecessary.

Especially at lighter weights, where the natural instinct is to catch the bar and stand up straight away. But that pause is doing more than you think.

What Happens Without the Pause

At lighter loads, most people will catch the bar and immediately rush out of the bottom.

There’s no real control in the receiving position — just a quick catch and stand.

The problem is, when the weight gets heavier, your body won’t let you do that anymore.

It will force you to pause.

Not because you’re thinking about it, but because your body needs to stabilise the load before it can stand.

What the Pause Teaches

By intentionally pausing in that position, we are training the exact thing your body will need under heavier weight. It helps build:

Stability in the catch position

Core control under load

Shoulder strength and positioning

Lat engagement (keeping the bar stable overhead)

Confidence under the bar

It also develops strength in that partial squat position, teaching you to load through your glutes and hamstrings instead of relying purely on your arms to press the bar up.

Why It Matters for Your Lifting

The jerk isn’t just about getting the bar overhead.

It’s about being able to receive it, control it, and own that position.

If you can’t stabilise the bar overhead, it doesn’t matter how strong your drive is — the lift won’t stick.

How to Add It Into Your Training

If you’re working towards heavier jerks, start including pause work into your training.

A simple way to do this:

• Catch your jerk

• Hold for 3 seconds

• Then stand to full extension

Count it out:1… 2… 3… then stand

It’s a small change, but it will make a big difference over time.

Because strength isn’t just about moving the bar.

It’s about controlling it 💙
