Beliefs and Behaviours: The Loop That Keeps You Stuck
This is something I talk about with nutrition and personal training clients all the time:
It’s that your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are all connected especially when it comes to our limiting beliefs about food.
Let’s say this happens:
You eat some chocolate.
You think: “I have no will power.”
You feel: Guilty, ashamed and anxious.
So you do something else to feel better… you eat more chocolate or you punish yourself.
You think: “I’m a failure.” And that’s how the feedback loop begins.
You’re not just repeating the behaviour—you’re reinforcing the belief behind it.
But here’s the thing about limiting beliefs:
No one actually wants to believe them and they serve us no purpose at all.
So it’s time to think about and reframe to make your beliefs serve you not work against you.
As yourself, do you actually believe:
You have no will power?
You can’t stick to anything?
You’re all-or-nothing?
You can’t change your eating habits?
I’m guessing… probably not.
So let’s refrain it:
What do you want to believe?
“I do have will power.”
“I can follow through.”
“I can find a middle ground.”
“I can achieve my goals.”
Now, here’s where we can change what we think:
What’s a small action that would help turn that new belief into reality?
Because your actions reinforce your beliefs.
When you take action aligned with your new beliefs, you begin to build evidence for them and therefore your brain believes you can do it.
You feel better. So you do better.
Which makes you feel even better.
Suddenly, the downward spiral becomes an upward one.
That’s the feedback loop in action.
If beliefs drive behaviours and behaviours reinforce beliefs… by adding a small action we can change our beliefs.
So here’s what I want you to think about:
What’s a belief I have about myself or food that’s keeping me stuck?
Do I actually want to keep believing that?
If not—what do I want to believe instead?
What’s one small action I could take to reinforce that new belief?
